Just documented by Pontiac Historical services, it was born like you see it! This is a very rare luxury muscle car. There were 2 tri-power motors available, one was 318 hp, this is the 348 hp! It was born a 4-speed with a posi, 8 lugs wheels and in these colors. Of course, the modern a/c was added. #s matching. Genuine Bonneville Sport Coupe, the Bonneville was the top of the line and 7 inches longer than the Catalina. Pontiac built over 1/4 million 389 motors in 1961, only 1,352 were 348 hp! How many are still in the car they were born in? This is a 79,000 mile Alabama car.
EXTERIOR: Very desirable 1 year only bubble top. This one has a clean, dry southern body. I believe it has it’s original metal. It is laser beam straight, the gaps are right, doors shut like new. Repainted it’s beautiful original Coronado Red metallic and Shelltone Ivory roof. It’s like a piece of wet candy, polished like glass. The chrome and trim are in very nice shape, straight and shiny. It has deluxe mirrors. Good original glass. It was born with 8 lug wheels and these are originals, unique to 1962. They are wrapped in BFG radial redline tires.
INTERIOR: I believe it is mostly original and the dash area looks great. Padded dash is really nice, the chrome, paint, knobs, gauges are very nice. Original wonderbar radio works. Original steering wheel with no cracks! The Mark IV air conditioner is neatly installed. There is also a set of gauges to monitor the engine vitals. Very nice original door panels, they do have speakers in the carpeted area, new armrests. I believe the upholstery is original and it looks great, cushions are firm. Carpet looks good and it has a set of Pontiac mats. Above the headliner and visors are excellent. It has an optional map light.
ENGINE COMPARTMENT: This is the original motor to this car. The unit number matches the PHS docs that we just ordered. It’s an M4 code making it the high performance 389 tri-power making 348 hp. Features factory power steering and brakes, a modern air conditioning system has been neatly installed. The front of the motor is also upgraded it to a serpentine belt with billet pulleys. Overall, it’s very clean. The paint on the firewall is still original!
TRUNK COMPARTMENT: Under the trunk lid and the jamb are painted smooth and glossy. Inside is rock solid and it has the complete red and gray speckled liner kit. It also has the jack assembly and an eight lug wheel for a spare. It also has the removable trunk light.
UNDERSIDE: Underneath this car appears to be rock solid. The floors, rockers and even the lower quarter panels appear to be original metal with no rust at all. It has been maintained as needed. Front end components are clean, shocks and springs look new. In back the shocks have been replaced, it has airbags in the springs. An original type dual exhaust system was very neatly installed. This has the 8 lug drum brakes at all four wheels, these were considered superior at the time. Looking up at the motor it’s clean. The correct T10 4-speed looks fresh and has a new Hurst competition linkage. It has it’s original Saf-T-Track posi rear end, the tag is still attached to it.
SERVICE: We inspected the car and replaced the backup light switch, charged the a/c, adjusted the turn signal switch and replaced a taillight bulb.
CONCLUSION: This is an extremely rare car that checks out really well. There probably isn’t another one like it!
I, Jay Grams, take pride in personally writing the descriptions for virtually every car for about the last 30 years now. A significant amount of effort goes into fact checking. What I am offering is my professional impression of the vehicle. Our salesmen are happy to assist with descriptions and making sure your questions are answered. One great suggestion is letting us do a walk around video that explains the car’s condition in detail. **These cars are displayed in a museum. If interested in a particular car, make an appointment with a salesman to see that car. Without an appointment there is an admission fee to enter the showroom. If you buy a car, your admission will be refunded, and you will be given a 1 year membership.
