1964 Jaguar XKE Coupe

Coming off of a string of LeMans wins through the 1950s, Jaguar in the 1960s produced one of the greatest sports cars of all time- the E-Type. First shown to the public in 1961, the E-Type (also known as the XKE) is widely considered one of the most beautiful cars ever produced and has the driving dynamics to match. Powered by Jaguar’s legendary, torquey dual overhead cam inline-6, the XKE was capable of a true 150 mph and could run from 0-60 mph in less than 7 seconds. What really set the E-Type apart from the other European sports cars of the era is that, when new, they were less than half the price of similar cars from Ferrari, Porsche and Mercedes and in many cases, they were more capable, and faster.

This 1964 Jaguar XKE Coupe is finished in a stunning shade of non-metallic gun metal gray and benefits from a comprehensive restoration that was completed in early 2023. According to the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate, this E-Type was produced on November 28th 1963 and was sent to Jaguar Cars New York on December 16th 1963. At this time it was finished in the color scheme of Opalescent Golden Sand over Light tan leather- an attractive color scheme but significantly improved upon with the current gray and red combination. The multi-year restoration of this car was carried out by Ramsay’s Customs in Bremerton, WA and included extensive fettling to get the body perfectly dialed in, and painstaking paintwork that is without a doubt show car quality. 16” knockoff wire wheels have been paint matched to the exterior color and are complimented by a set of Coker redline tires that offer a great period correct appearance. Even the undercarriage and engine bay are finished to perfection- this car would be tough competition at any English car show.

On the inside, the leather is finished in a color known as Apollo Scarlet which provides truly striking contrast against the gray exterior. The 1964 XKE still had much of the early interior design from the original cars in 1961 which look much more sporty than the later cars and are the most sought after among collectors. A pair of original sport bucket seats look great in the cabin and are lighter weight than the more heavily padded seats that appeared with the “Series 1.5” refresh. Sitting in front of the driver is a wood rimmed 3-spoke steering wheel and a full suite of beautiful white on black Smiths gauges. Swing open the rear hatch and red leather covers the entire area- accented by stainless steel trim stripes that you can slide your luggage on and keep the leather scratch free. All of the upholstery work was completed by Stitches Custom Upholstery in Poulsbo, WA and was finished to an unbelievably high level.

Sitting under the massive front-hinged bonnet sits this XKE’s numbers matching 3.8-liter dual overhead cam inline-6. Rated at 265 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, this engine proved itself in racing before making its way into the E-Type and not only offers great performance but is outstanding to look at under the hood. It is clear looking under the hood of this example that considerable time was put into making it perfect- polished cam covers are accented by a gold painted head that the 6 spark plug wires snake their way into. Off to the side, 3 fully rebuilt SU Carburetors breathe through the original-style air box and make a great induction noise when you press the throttle. A ceramic coated header and stainless exhaust keep the underhood temperatures down-which is also helped by electric cooling fans.

It has been said that when Enzo Ferrari saw the Jaguar E-Type for the first time, he proclaimed it the most beautiful car in the world. All it takes is one look at this beautiful Series 1 coupe to understand what would make him say such a thing. This car has been restored to a tremendously high level and would be a perfect showpiece or a fun weekend driver for someone who appreciates the finest craftsmanship. To replicate this build would be staggeringly expensive and time consuming, and this example is fully sorted and ready to be enjoyed!
