This attention-grabbing, absolutely dialed-in 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu SS Tribute is bound to attract a lot of potential suitors thanks to its awesome combination of custom paint, thundering 454 big block V8 power under the hood, and a host of choice options that all work together to make it a blast out on the open road. Sinister and clean, this vintage street brawler is sure to turn heads everywhere it goes. Finished in high-impact Inferno Orange Metallic and black LeMans-style SS stripes, this ’68 certainly looks the part as of one of the era’s most potent street cars. The body and paint were restored to a high, top driver-quality level recently, and it’s clear that someone has taken exceptional care of the car ever since. Sure, it’s been driven, because no man can resist the siren song of a big block and red-hot paint job begging to be shown off, but it has also been carefully washed and waxed, leaving a beautiful, smooth finish. Any imperfections that might be found upon closer examination are very minor, and in fact, a professional clay bar, buff-and-wax job would easily step this A-Body up into ‘show-ready’ territory. The custom paint is simply gorgeous in person, deep and rich, and the way it reflects and dances under our lights give it an amazing, one-of-a-kind bespoke curb appeal that make this one of the most exciting Chevelles currently in our inventory. Those black stripes were painted on and then buried under the clearcoat, and along with the addition of the dual-cowl hood, the car looks equal parts aggressive and flashy. There’s a black-out SS grille up front, outlined in bright chrome trim that matches the headlight surrounds and shiny front bumper, while out back the tailpanel was treated to the same treatment, with a blacked-out SS-panel punctuated with a bunch of clean chrome and a matching big bumper underneath. All that bright stuff really glitters up against the already flashy paint, and with ‘SS’ and ‘396’ badges (even though there’s now an even larger 454 underneath) found throughout, this Chevelle isn’t exactly sneaking up anyone. The interior has a stock look at first glance, although you’ll quickly see that it has upgrades where it matters and matches the custom look of the exterior perfectly. The black bucket seats and rear bench aren’t factory-issue but have a cool-and-correct vintage vibe and wear GM-style vinyl upholstery that looks barely touched. New door panels, a fresh set of black carpets, and a center console all dress things up, and the wood-rimmed, 3-spoke steering wheel at the helm really sets the tone for the driver. The factory gauges just beyond that wheel are very clean and legible, augmented by a trio of auxiliary units mounted under the dash that help keep a closer eye on the big block under the hood. And speaking of the dash, you’ll quickly note that it’s been upgraded to a more modern look overall with freshened/restored bezels, trim, and a plush pad up top, a mild custom look that flows straight into the under-dash A/C unit that’s blowing nice and cold. A horseshoe ‘staple’ shifter inside the center console manages the transmission and looks very sporty inside, and we’ve always loved the way that it’s perfectly nestled into the middle console of a bucket-seat interior. The trunk was finished with spatter paint and shows off the super-clean and super-solid pans, and there’s enough room back there to account for just about any travel plans. The engine is a thumping 454 cubic inch big block that has been nicely dressed in a proper coat of Chevy Orange and lots of blacked-out flash. Black Chevrolet valve covers and a matching open-element air cleaner give it a burly look, and the performance aluminum intake and FiTech fuel-injection system atop the block ensure that it runs even better than it looks. Clearly lots of money and time was spent under the hood, the big aluminum radiator keeps everything cool, and the modern alternator and HEI ignition system ensures reliability. Long-tube headers feed a throaty dual exhaust system with shorty mufflers with turn-downs that exit just underneath the rear bumper. With seemingly endless reserves of big block torque, this Chevelle is a blast to drive, and there’s something special about running your vintage muscle car through the gears of a capable TH350 3-speed automatic transmission that makes it so special. The 10-bolt posi-traction rear end is filled with 3.73 gears and doesn’t mind the big levels of horsepower churned out by the big block, and you’ll be pleased with just how clean it is underneath, with new components found everywhere you look – from fresh bushings, a big front sway bar, new shocks, springs, and coils all around, and fresh CPP trailing arms that were set-up out back. Power front disc brakes bring this bruiser to an abrupt stop, and a highly appreciated power steering system makes driving this Chevelle an absolute pleasure. Beautiful US Mag wheels wear staggered 225/45/17 front and 275/40/17 rear performance radials that stuff the wheel wells perfectly and finish the sinister look. This ’68 Chevelle Malibu represents the rare opportunity to own a vintage muscle car you can drive without worries. Fast and fun, it’s ready to rock today!
