1968 Citroen DS 19 Sedan

For consignment, a 1968 Citroen DS 19 sedan showing 59,179 miles that are non verifiable.  Restored and once displayed in Hungary, it features the hydropneumatic suspension of course, and has won numerous local awards including first place in Doylestown, PA’s main show, and a first at the prestigious New Hope Auto Show, also in Bucks County, which has been in existence since the late 50’s.

Exterior

At a time when American cars were straight paneled and square, the counterpart over in France decidedly bug-like in its roundness.  In profile, there’s nothing quite like the DS with a long hood that crosses over the door seam, the lines then heading northward on the A-pillar to meet a sloping roof which ends in a cove flanked by marker lights, then the rear window is matched by the slope of the trunk, finally finding an end at the inset tail lights and wraparound chrome bumper.  All the while, the rear wheels are tucked behind the rear panel which is graced by a wide C-pillar on top of it, painted Star White along with the roof, contrasting with the car’s Cream coverage.  The car seems to taper from the front and where there’s a heaviness to the appearance of the face and hood, there’s a spry lightness to the back with the rear wheels trailing far behind with very little overhang and the narrow arrangement of the tail lights.  Citroen was owned by Michelin so naturally, those are the tires of choice on the 15-inch wheels.  Imperfections are few on this car with good paint and metalwork.  Some cracking and repair on the front valance and a scratch low on a door is all we see.

Interior

The award winning design begins on the door panels with striped and stitched sections sandwiching and upturned armrest on a buckskin panel with robust hardware for the door and window and this pattern repeats on all four doors with the passengers, (navigator?), door the lone unit with a map pocket.  The bucket seats sit side by side, dressed in stitched buckskin cloth and adorned with Citroen’s unique two piece headrests.  The rear bench keeps the cloth but lacks the headrest but is equally as clean.  Need more uniqueness?  How about the single spoke steering wheel, wide open at the top and giving way to three gauges that include speedometer, (in kilometers), tachometer, and circular idiot light display reminiscent of a Zodiac circle.  A simple clock follows, then a series of fan buttons, finally an AM/FM radio to the far right, and everything is in excellent condition.  That includes the carpet, headliner, and the lined trunk.

Drivetrain

The hood lifts traditional style!  C’est magnifique!  And allows a view of the very clean 1985cc inline 4 cylinder engine rated at 84 horsepower and fueled by a Weber 2-barrel carburetor.  A 4-speed manual transmission keeps power in the front with 4.375 gearing.  Disc brakes are up front and drums in the rear.

Undercarriage

Almost as interesting as the top side is the underside with a belly pan covering most of the real estate underneath.  The single exhaust finds its way to the stock style muffler before exiting via twin tips.  The hydropneumatics system provides for beefy connections to hubs, clean and painted green in the back.  It’s very clean underneath with no visible rust nor errant fluids.

Drive-Ability

This is not our first rodeo around the Eiffel Tower, and this presents as a very nice example of a desirable French model.  Known for comfort rather than speed, the DS sets out on the test loop with adequate acceleration and that infamous floaty ride that self-levels along the way, smoothing any imperfections on the road.  It also handles surprisingly well.  All systems go as the functional items worked as intended.  While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

When the craving for a croissant arises, there may be no other mode of transportation than the Citroen DS.  But it’s just as good for that French delicacy, Chic Filet, (or is it Chick-fil-A?).  Anyway, this is a nicely restored Citroen with all of the ingredients that make it smoother than a vat of Hollandaise.  If you’ve waited for the right DS, your bateau has arrived.  If you’re ready for a bon voyage, call the mall tout de suite.
