The name Z/28 will obviously be forever linked w/ the Chevrolet Camaro. In reality, it was simply a 3-digit, alphanumeric GM sales code for a ‘Special Performance Package’ that was introduced in December 1966. GM wanted to challenge the Ford Mustang on all fronts, and they wanted to compete against the Mustang in the Trans Am series, recently created by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). The SCCA had rules, and GM didn’t have an engine that would fit into this category. They were either too large, (over 305ci), or were too under powered (6-cylinders) to compete. Chevrolet wanted to offer consumers a street-legal race ready performance car, so they got creative and went to work. The beauty of early GM engines was the ability to swap parts to enhance their power, so Chevrolet engineer Vince Piggins did just that. He used a 327ci block and installed a crankshaft from a 283ci motor making a ‘stroker’ engine w/ a 4” cylinder bore that gave the new engine a cubic inch displacement of 302. In doing so, they created one of America’s premier muscle cars.

‘Red Hills Rods & Classics’ is very happy to offer you this absolutely gorgeous, all #’s matching 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28, finished in arguably the most beautiful color combination of Hugger Orange (Code 72) w/ Black Stripes, wrapped around a sleek black vinyl bucket-seat interior. This gorgeous ’69 Camaro Z28 underwent a complete cosmetic restoration several years back, showing only 39,400 original miles at the time when the work began. The body was in outstanding condition to start with, wearing its original paint w/ super straight original body panels all around. After lathering the car in its factory correct Hugger Orange paint, it was then buffed & polished to a brilliant shine, as were the black stripes. All of the chrome, grille, stainless-steel trim, emblems, etc., are in show quality condition. From the correct T3 headlights up front, to the rear spoiler in back, this car looks factory fresh in every way. She has a perfect stance, and sits on original 15” x 7” Rally Wheels, wrapped w/ correct Goodyear E70 Wide Tread GT tires. You can walk around this car a hundred times, and it looks perfect from every angle. The undercarriage is beautifully detailed as well, w/ glossy black floor metal and correct components throughout. Please look closely at the chassis photos to see what a wonderful job they did.

When you open the driver’s door, you will find a beautiful black vinyl bucket seat interior w/ console in outstanding original condition from front to back. We were told that the interior is all-original throughout, and nothing that we can see disputes that statement. The bucket-seats, door panels, dash pad, carpeting, center console w/ factory gauges, etc., all appear to be original and in beautiful condition. All of the original gauges including the factory tachometer are in good working order, except for the original clock, which seems to work intermittently. The trunk area was beautifully restored using the correct trunk mat, spare wheel/tire, and jack assembly.

Now, let’s get to the good stuff, shall we?

Pop open the hood, and inside the highly detailed engine bay resides the original #’s matching 302ci/290hp motor lathered in fresh Chevy Orange paint, featuring the correct finned valve covers, correct Holley 4053 carburetor, correct factory cowl induction, correct smog system, correct distributor, correct alternator, etc. The suffix code on the engine pad reads V1I22DZ, and the partial VIN 19N565815 is stamped underneath by the oil filter. The original 302ci DZ motor is linked to the original #’s matching & highly desirable Muncie M22 Rock Crusher 4-speed transmission, w/ Muncie code P9S18C, and partial VIN stamp 19N565815. Power is then sent to the original 4.10 12-bolt rear end, which wears an axle stamp of BV 1217 G2. She fires up nicely, settling into a nice smooth idle, and she runs & performs wonderfully.
