1969 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

I guess I must be dumb

‘Cause you had a pocket full of horses

Trojan and some of them used

But it was Saturday night

I guess that makes it all right

And you say, “what have I got to lose?”

And honey, I say

Little red Corvette

Baby, you’re much too fast, oh

Little red Corvette

You need a love that’s gonna last…

For consignment, a Stingray from 1969. With a restoration started in the late 1980’s by the consignor’s father, then completed by the talented hands of “The Vette Shop” from Warminster, Pennsylvania in 2003. It sports a big block 454ci V8, has many convenience options, factory N14 side pipes and a removable body matching color T top. 1969 was a great year for the Corvette, with its curvaceous sculpted lines and bodacious power from those 454 cubes…Read On!

Exterior

It’s 1969 and this Corvette is bathed in Monza Red over the fiberglass moldings that make up the body. Bring on the Playboy centerfold photographer as this design utilizes some wonderful lines, has a retro throwback with the shark “gills” in satin silver inserts within the front quarter, and uses glorious chrome (soon to go away!). That chrome leads the way with a V shaped front bumper and surrounding grille supports, all in good condition. A few small bumps of inclusions are seen near the driver’s hidden headlight. Stingray now one word is showing up in badging just above the “gills”. Below on the rockers are the N14 side pipes complete with guards. These provide a nice bark for the tones from the 454. Chrome window surrounds and side view mirrors are there too. A T top which has removable white fiberglass panels works flawlessly and shows no leaks, but the consignor states that the car sat in a garage for 12 years, so it will most likely need new seals due to some dry rotting. In back a vertical rear glass has the long “flying buttress” B pillars that gently land on the rear deck which is adorned with the gas filler cap in the very center. The back of the car leaves an impression also with the split chromed bumpers, round taillights and a C O R V E T T E badge in the very center of the bumpers. Paint is in overall very nice condition showing fairly smoothly all around. 15 inch deep trim ringed rally wheels are on all 4 corners and all are wrapped with raised white lettered BFG Radial T/A’s.

Interior

In wonderful contrast to the exterior Monza Red, we offer up a black leather covered sporty interior. This neat black first makes its appearance on the door panels. Neatly molded and sculpted with small striped black/charcoal broadcloth center panels the lock turn knobs, door actuator, and armrest are housed here. Slipping into the high back thin design buckets we have smooth black leather bolsters and wide tuck and roll smooth black leather inserts. These chairs show beautifully and have little wear. The center console with its padded armrest/storage lid, with the remainder of the console moving towards the dash in molded black plastic to cover the hump. Also here is the shift lever, handbrake, temp wheels, and ashtray surrounded in back plastic with shiny surrounding trimmings. We see these center panels within this console as showing some dirt and scratching. Moving up from the console we have the radio which is an aftermarket Blaupunkt AM/FM/Cassette system with a few EQ buttons. Also 5 gauges are lined up above in a panel that monitors everything but your blood pressure (as the brochure says!). A nice black rally steering wheel with a trio of satin chromed center spokes which come together in the center and mount up with the black center steering column. An angled dash houses dual deep inset round speedo and tach as well as eyeball A/C vents, and a few simple pulls. Padded black vinyl covers the dash and dash top and is all in excellent condition. Black carpeting is on the floors, and this wraps up a very clean presentation…applause please for this sporty interior.

Drivetrain

Under the forward flipping hood is a 454ci V8. This is not a numbers matching engine block, however the consignor states the original rotating assembly was placed into this block, but it is not supported by any documentation so we will take the consignor’s word for it. The engine block codes out to circa 1973-1975 454ci V8. On top is a 4-barrel carburetor, and on back is the numbers matching Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission. On the back is the factory correct coded Posi rear axle with 3.08 gearing. Headers are installed and these blend with the side piping to provide the big bark for the exhale.

Undercarriage

Showing off very nicely with virtually no rust, and black painted solid straight steel and floor pans. Independent SLA front suspension, and full independent rear with a frame anchored differential unit. The position of each rear wheel is established with 3 links, tubular axle driveshafts, transverse strut rods, and torque control arms with transverse leaf springs. Power disc braking is on all 4 corners.

Drive-Ability

A quick starter and when the 454 cubes came to life it was exhilarating! I just adore these late 60’s ‘Vettes so I hopped into the thin high backs, and it was off to the test track, (definitely one of the perks of this job!). Here this car has great acceleration, bias free panic stopping, and great handling with that complex suspension. The A/C needs an R12 recharge, and the interior light is stuck on due to the switch being frozen.

All replaced parts will come with their original parts if you decide to bring it back to factory, even the original block! Otherwise, you have a clean high performance piece of sculpture that you can drive everyday reliably, and look great while doing it. The red/black is definitely an eye catcher, and the lines bring us back to 1969 all over again. Just a little TLC and it will g]be not only a goer, but also a shower!
